So, tell us a little bit about yourself!

Hi! Hey! Hello! My name is Samantha. I live in the greater Boston area with my husband and our 3 doodles (Dexter, Olivia and Gunner). I run this business full time +and I am about to launch a new non dog related business with my husband. Before this, I worked in the corporate tech world and realized pretty quickly that I wanted a life where I could make my own schedule. As soon as I brought home my dog Dexter, I knew my life was about to change for the better.

Awesome! Tell us a little bit about your company! What do you sell and what inspired you to start doing this?

Dapper Dexter started almost 7 years ago, on accident. I made a bowtie for Dexter and posted a picture of him to my Facebook page. Friends and family wanted bowties for their pets and less than 6 months later, I was doing Dapper Dexter full time. It has taken over my life ever since in the best way possible.

Dapper Dexter is a pet accessory brand that makes dog bowties, bandanas, dog collars, and walking sets. Our products are sold on our website and you can find them in over 300 small shops across the US. We also attend several artisan shows throughout the year including our biggest show - THE BIG E which is 17 days long.

What do you want people to know about owning a small business?

Being a small business owner is extremely challenging. It is hard to know what to do and when to do it. I try to always do what feels best for me in the long run. That includes growing and investing when needed; but this also includes stepping back and taking breaks as needed. It can also be extremely isolating. For a small business owner like myself, I am a one women operation in my house. My dogs are my only co-workers.

However, being a small business owner is also extremely rewarding. I love the community that I’m surrounded with. I have met so many furriends virtually and in person over these last 7 years. I have gotten to be apart of so many special moments, like making dog accessories for someone’s wedding day - or baby announcement. It is the best feeling.

What is your favorite part about owning your own small business?

Aside from the amazing community and bond I have with so many customers, I think my favorite part about owning a small business is the freedom. I love making my own schedule and being home with my husband and dogs. I've worked really hard to create a work life balance that I didn’t have the first 5 years of doing this. I love being able to run to get my nails done - or go to Trader Joe’s on a Tuesday at 10am if I want to.
