Valentine's Day is coming up and it's time to start planning what treats to get your special someone! Of course, nothing is better than homemade goodies and we have the pawfect treats to share with the dogs in your life!

These soft-baked heart cookies are made with lots of fruits and veggies, like bananas and beets, as well as peanut butter and honey to make the ultimate tasty treats. The red color of these cookies actually comes from the beets! We love that we can use a natural ingredient to get this fun color, plus beets have great nutritional properties like providing vitamin C and fiber, as well as helping keep their skin and coat healthy, and aiding in digestion. As always, check with your vet if you are unsure of a new ingredient for your pup!

What makes these treats so pawsome for Valentine's Day is the ability to write little phrases on the cookies with edible markers. Draw your inspiration from classic conversation heart candies and get creative! Write your dog's name, some classic phrases like "LUV U", and don't forget to make a few dog-themed ones like "WIGGLE BUTT" and "U R PAWSOME"!

Supplies needed:

  • Bowls for Mixing
  • Spatula
  • Rolling Pin
  • Baking Sheet
  • Parchment Paper
  • Heart Cookie Cutters
  • Edible Markers

Ingredients:

  • 1 ⅓ cup Oat Flour
  • ⅓ cup Dog-Safe, Xylitol-Free Peanut Butter
  • ¼ cup Unsweetened Applesauce
  • 1 Banana, mashed
  • 3 tablespoons of Honey
  • ¼ cup cooked beets, pureed

* Please double check any allergies or dietary needs with your vet if you are unsure of your pup’s dietary needs! We want to make sure they have a great time enjoying a special treat with you and no one ends up with an unhappy tummy!

Step 1
Preheat the oven to 350 °F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a reusable silicone baking sheet.

Step 2
In a bowl, combine the oat flour, peanut butter, unsweetened applesauce, mashed banana, honey, and beets. Mix until well incorporated and forming a dough.

SW Tip: If the dough is sticky, add a little bit more oat flour until the dough no longer sticks to your hands

Step 3
Once dough has formed, make a ball, wrap in parchment paper, and chill in the fridge for 15 minutes.

Step 4
Once chilled, roll out the dough so it is 1/4in thick. Use your cookie cutter to cut out your shapes and then carefully transfer to a baking sheet. Cookies should be placed an inch apart on the baking sheet.

SW Tip - Having trouble rolling out or cutting out your dough? Sprinkle some oat flour on your dough to help it stick less when cutting out our shapes!

Step 5
Once the baking sheet is full, place in the fridge to chill for 20 minutes.

SW Tip: Chilling your dough before baking helps the cookies keep their cut out shape!

Step 6
Bake for 8-10 minutes and remove from the oven. Let the cookies cool completely before decorating.

Step 7
Once cookies have cooled completely, use edible markers to write saying and draw designs on the cookies! Get creative and write and draw whatever makes you and your pup happy!

Time for your pup to enjoy these treats! Serve on top of a pup cup, with some plain Greek yogurt, or by itself for a quick treat. Don't forget to give your pups lots of love and share photos of your creations with us by tagging Sassy Woof on social media!

Notes:
Cookies can be stored in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
If you do not want to use an edible marker to decorate the cookies, you can serve without decorating! You can also use any shape cookie cutter.
