For cuddle time with my pup, I like to get cozy with a warm beverage, a good movie, and of course a fuzzy blanket! My dog loves to have his own blanket for snuggles, car rides, and sleep time, so I had to make sure he had one that showed his silly and fun personality! What better way to spend some time with your pet and make them a personalized blanket? You can make one for your dog, cat, or even just make one for yourself!

This tutorial is so easy and does not require any sewing! All you need is some fleece, fabric scissors, a ruler, and a cuddle buddy to share the finished product with! You can personalize this as much as you want with different prints and adjusting the size to fit your pet. Get as fancy or simple as you would like! To make ours, we used a combination of anti-pill fleece and plush fleece. See what fleece options your local fabric store has to find the best combination for your project! Check out the full tutorial below and prepare to get cozy!

Supplies needed:

  • Two pieces of fleece fabric measuring 36in x 58in, one piece for each side of the blanket. SW Tip: To buy this size, ask for 1 yard of fleece for each side at the fabric counter!
  • Scissors for cutting fabric
  • Ruler

Step 1

Trim off any uneven edges on your fleece fabric. These uneven edges could come from an uneven cut at the fabric counter or a selvedge (aka the edge with a small border that may include a different print or text that is left on the fabric to prevent unraveling).

Step 2

Line up your two pieces of fabric to ensure they are the same width and length. Trim any excess so both pieces match in size.

Step 3

While the fleece pieces are lined up, cut out a 2in x 2in square from each corner. This will help your corners not bunch up and our blanket will have a rounded corner when you are finished!

Step 4

While the fleece pieces are lined up, make a series of 2in long cuts that are 1in apart to create a line of fleece strips on the edge of your fleece pieces.

Step 5

Once all sides of your fleece pieces have been cut, it is time to start knotting the strips! Starting in one corner of your blanket, begin to tie the strips in a double knot. Make the first knot loose, and then tighten the second knot. If the first knot is too tight, your blanket will start to bunch up and will not lay flat easily.

SW Tip: If you find the strips are too short or are difficult to tie, you can cut the tabs another inch or two to make them longer!

Step 6

Tie all strips together until all sides are complete! Enjoy your new blanket with your pet and start the cuddles!

That’s it! Now it’s time to put on your favorite movie or show and prepare for snuggles! Let us know if you make this Pup Project by tagging us on social media with photos of your snuggly, furry friends!

Project Notes:

The finished blanket size for the above fabric measurements is roughly 30 in x 52 in once trimmed down and tied. This size is great for medium-big dogs, for covering a whole dog bed, or being able to make smaller pets extra bundled up and cozy! If you would like a larger or smaller blanket, you can adjust the size of the fleece during step 1 to achieve your desired size.

To figure out how much material to use for your custom blanket size, take the measurements of the desired finished blanket and add 6in to the length and width to allow for the strips to be cut and tied.

For example, if you like the size of our Sassy Woof dog blankets on our site, the finished measurements are 27 in x 36.5 in. In order to get this size blanket, your starting fleece pieces should be 33 in x 42.5 in.
